The story takes place in the late 1960s in the United States, where the first two games in the series took place. The New Colossus is the third game in the series, and the first one not based on the first game engine. The story follows the events of the previous game, with some differences.
The story begins with the attack of the New Order on the camp where the previous game's main character was based. The main character, known as BJ, is forced to leave the camp and go to New York, where he is given a job as a security guard at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
The game is based on the real events of the late 1960s. The player can choose to play in either the real or the fictional universe.
